Missinipe’s history

Collection

Missinipe sits on the western shore of Otter Lake in northern Saskatchewan, about 80 kilometres north of La Ronge. Its name comes from the Woodland Cree name for the nearby Churchill River. Bill Barry's Geographic Names of Saskatchewan gives the word as Misi-nipiy, meaning "big water", while Tourism Saskatchewan gives it as Mahttawi-sipiy, meaning "difficult river".
